The story of Ceanapse began with a stark realization: climate change was actively threatening the shorelines of Lake Victoria and devastating the livelihoods of local fishing communities. This environmental crisis disproportionately affected women engaged in small-scale fishing, fish trading, and value addition, sparking a vision for an organization that could offer meaningful, targeted support.
This initial vision was soon catalyzed by the devastating impacts of post-election violence, which underscored an urgent need for robust community safety nets. In response to these compounding crises, Ceanapse was officially established. The organization anchored itself in a clear mission: to tackle the multifaceted challenges of the blue economy while building enduring community resilience.
From these foundational roots, Ceanapse rapidly scaled its impact and expanded its operations across diverse, critical ecosystems. The organization broadened its footprint beyond Lake Victoria to include the shores of Lake Turkana, the Nairobi River, Pate Island in Lamu, and Diani Chale. Across these multiple sites, Ceanapse launched comprehensive programs encompassing environmental education, blue conservation, and early warning systems to ensure safety at sea. Pushing the boundaries of environmental stewardship, they also introduced marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) initiatives, actively engaging coastal communities in cutting-edge ocean alkalinity enhancement efforts.
